Globalization in Contemporary Asia
The conference will bring together leading experts from Russia, East Asia, the Middle East as well as Europe and the USA. The conference will not only help identify seminal theoretical and contemporary problems of Asian geopolitics but also contribute to the field of regional studies from a linguistic standpoint.
Section 1. Geopolitical Trends in Contemporary Asia
- Civilization and socio-cultural identity in Asia with special emphasis on global and local factors of Asian geopolitics, the typology of civilizations, the unity and diversity of national political cultures.
- Politics and power in Asia including the essential features of politics and international relations in the region, philosophical foundations of politics, the socio-economic aspects of political regimes’ evolution, the politics and tradition of national identity, politics and morality, politics and ideology, the prospects of political development.
- Trade and economic relations in Asia: tendencies and trends.
- Panel discussion: Towards a Euro-Asian Global System
Section 2. The Middle East and Asia: Interdependence of Globalization Processes
- The Middle East and the Eurasian space: Development potential and problems in the context of globalization. Russia's interests.
- China's rise in the Middle East. The concept of One Belt, One Road, and regional integration.
- The Middle East and Asia: New mechanisms to face emerging security challenges, combat terrorism, transnational crime, and drug trafficking
- Iran: The current military and political situation, Russia's role in regional stabilization.
- The dialog of Civilizations and cultures: Is a unified approach possible?
Section 3. South and Southeast Asia: The Process of Globalization and Traditional Structures
- South and Southeast Asia: Common problems of social and economic development in the Region.
- China's growing influence in the region, China’s relations with Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India. Prospects of further evolution of the ‘China factor’ in the region.
- Russia's Interests; increasing Russia's influence through the SCO.
- Reshaping Russia’s relations with India and Pakistan. Attempts to build a new relationship with Afghanistan (contacts with the Taliban).
- South Asia: the problems of security and counterterrorism efforts in the region. Extremist and terrorist organizations; different approaches of regional governments to fighting terrorism.
Special Section on the Conference: The Linguistic Aspects of Regional Studies: Cultural Hermeneutics and Communicative Strategies in Contemporary Asia
- Intercultural communication: Communicative strategies in Asian countries.
- Languages and culture vs. languages of culture.
- Regional studies through the lens of language: Contemporary methods of teaching East Asian languages.
- Art and literature in Asia.
Terms of Participation
Registration deadlines:
• Foreign participants should contact the Organizing Committee well in advance to receive a visa invitation.
• Applications for participation will be accepted until September 9, 2019. The conference proposal should include the following information about the author: full name, position, academic degree and title (if any), name of organization or school, email address, the title of the paper. The application should include a brief summary of the paper in English (up to 200-300 words and 5-6 keywords). The application should be sent by email: irs@hse.ru. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select materials for the conference program. The organizing committee will consider proposals until September 14, 2019.
• The letters of acceptance will be sent before September 20, 2019.
We are planning to publish a collective monograph based on submitted papers. The articles for the monograph should be sent before October 20, 2019, to Inna V. Kim: irs@hse.ru. (up to 20,000 characters in English or Russian).
We are unable to cover travel expenses.
